Arrived quickly as usual from the free super saver delivery and decided to watch a bluray immediately to test the player, however, as mentioned in other reviews there is a slight annoying sound when the player is in use. Not sure whether the one that I had was damaged but I would definitely recommend to others as the quality is great. 1 of 2 people found the following review helpful

Exactly as you would expect for this money. Great picture, good sound, lightweight construction. My only issue was the box was received obviously previously opened and the Spiderman Bluray redemption details were missing. It was disappointing that Amazon would send out a product in this condition. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful

I bought it to match my new SONY TV but, while I am happy with the TV, this player sucks. It works very well but it does not work all the time.First problem I had was the sound. Not fun to watch the movie with the control in the hand changing the volume up and down ... after some hours in internet I found the fix. Some sound options to be deactivated ... I am using a new sony player with a new sony TV, both connected using the Bravia integration option, and even then settings are not compatible.
This was quite bad but things are getting worse. I bought several blue-rays from amazon and one of them is not playing, it freezes after a few minutes and I have to unplug the device, yes, cut the electricity because the dam machine gets stuck with a piece of ... yes, another piece of Sony technology, blue-ray. All DVDs play just fine.
I have updated the firmware, connected the player to internet, cheked again for updates but nothing. I have read that sony players have issues but never believed these would be so serious. I am looking looking for fixes in internet forums, the last thing I have read is that the option to let blue-rays access the internet should be deactivated. Let's see if that works. It is unbelievable. Sony is going the same way Nokia, good products but incredibly bad software.
Don't buy SONY players, the TVs are still OK.

After two months with the BDPS490, I am very pleased with what I have bought. The BluRay picture is excellent, and it has happily read every old DVD from my collection that tried. The device is physically very thin, and fits excellently around the growing number of digi-boxes that have proliferated near the TV.The connectivity for the internet (here Ethernet rather than the WiFi of the BDPS590) has turned out to be much more engaging than I imagined. The device comes with BBC iPlayer and LoveFilm, both of which I have used many times to great satisfaction. It also scans the local network for DLNA devices, and in our house it has identified a Windows 7 machine and the NAS box, so that we can watch video from those sources as well as see our digital photos and listen to our music collection. At under £100 this is a very cheap way to get this functionality on the TV, so having internet and BluRay together is a really good deal.
The only downsides are the speed of navigation and occasional crashes. On the former, I would guess that to build to this price you have to use a fairly puny processor and therefore a slow user interface is to be expected. On the crashes: iPlayer seems to be vulnerable to crashing the box when you come to leave the iPlayer app after watching something. To reboot the box you need to hold the power button in for a few seconds until it powers down, then click it on again. Hopefully future firmware upgrades will make this right.

I have been looking for a wireless, networking Blu ray player. I have tried Panasonic and LG also Samsung players. Samsungs; when you play your films from the external storage over DLNA you cannot fast forward or rewind. LG didn't play all my files also want happy with picture and wireless quality. Panasonics sees the files but doesn't play some also didn't like the vierra etc. Also tried pioneer player as I have the pioneer TV top class but player wasn't top class as sound was perfect but picture and compatibility issues were exists with this and went for the this Sony although wasn't sure about the display software, I was so pleased with it. Play everything I throw. Good picture, good sound nice small design. Nice neat remote. If you have films on your NAS drive or external storage want to play wirelessly this is the one for me. But if you are going to play bluray discs only any will do. What Other Items Do Customers Buy After Viewing This Item?
