WiFi connection not reliable, the OS was not what it said on the box. Don't buy any Archos item unless it has an up to date O/S and includes the Google "White bag" app. always check compatibility with Google web site.
This product was not worth the cost, yes the cost of sending a faulty product back

I bought one of these over the weekend. Having bought my wife an iPad for her birthday recently, I'd found (partly out of envy) that I'd like a tablet myself. However, two £400+ such devices in the house seemed excessive (let alone expensive!!), so I was on the lookout for something cheap, but relatively well specced. I had been very keen on the new Google Nexus 7 tablet, but had read some early horror stories about the build quality, so I began to have doubts. Then I spotted this Archos 70b on offer in a local store...

I've only had it a couple of days, but that's plenty of time to get it up and running and start playing around. First impressions are that it's a fairly solid little device for the money, with a better version of Android than you'd expect to find for the price. It also has full access to the Google Play store as far as I can tell, which isn't always the case at the cheap end of the tablet spectrum. Once I updated to the latest version of the firmware, I had no problem transferring some video over to it - important, as part of the reason I wanted a tab is to be able to stuff it full of my unwatched films/TV shows for my often regular weekends away. Apps seem to run well enough on it, including a couple that I know to be fairly slow on my now-aging iPod Touch. Having had an Android phone in the past, it was perfectly easy to get to grips with the OS. Internet browsing and iPlayer viewing seems absolutely fine over my 10mb wifi connection.

There are some obvious minor grumbles - the screen quality is obviously nowhere near an iPad, the build is fairly plasticky and the battery life (although early days yet) may be a little on the short side. However, given that I managed to pay just £80 for it, due to it being on sale and receiving a further 20% discount because it was a display model and the last one in stock, I find it had to knock it too much!

At the end of the day, this fills the void left by downgrading from an Android to Blackberry phone and the fact that my iPod is a little too old and slow to play many of the the latest apps/games. It's not quite cutting edge, but for the price it's a solid, capable tablet for anyine who, like me, has a use for one but can't justify shelling out hundreds for one that will be next year's cast offs! If you can get it for a similarly filthy cheap price, it's well worth a punt in my opinion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Apps compatability a challenge, 13 Jun 2012

I bought the Archos specifically to run PocketFMS. The Archos was chosen for the screen brightness, 302 cd/m2, resolution 1024 and size, 7 inches. PocketFMS was to be bought off Google Play, chosen using my laptop on Google Play. I signed the Archos onto Google Play and the app had disappeared - it was was not compatible. I also needed a Bluetooth-GPS app and that was not compatible either (a fair number of apps fell into this category). I contacted Archos and asked why so many apps were not compatible with their hardware and I got a standard 'it is the app vendors problem, talk to them'. The app vendors do not know about individual hardware. The Archos meets my other requirements - impressive in fact. I got a copy of PocketFMS from their own web site and after some permission setting issues got it working on the Archos. Bottom line: check tablet and app are compatible before parting with the cash.

seller is dishonest and sold an inferior product that was advertised, for example advertised the android firmware to be 3.2 when it is only 2.x Returned product to seller, seller sent it back claiming there were scratches but in any case is not the product that was advertised or sold, so my impression this is a very dishonest product as when challenged that the advert picture did not resemble the received product, seller claimed that was the right product, clearly not as the spec. of the received product is no where near the one advertise, very inferior and currently disputing with Amazon. I also don't think this is an archos 70b with processor 1.2 as archos 70b is not stated on the front of our product like the picture. I would strongly recommend to all people interested in buying products from this person or company not to do so in future.

This product we received is only slightly better than the home hub which I purchased from carphonewarehouse for £75. This is only slightly better with youtube access so this is obviously not a £150+ product that we received.

Bad seller and con person.

This is my first Tablet of any kind and I would say I am an experienced Pc, Netbook, Windows 7 Smartphone user but have never used Android before. This Tablet uses 3.2 Honeycomb and I picked up its ease of use in about 10 minutes. Firmware update completed in minutes with no problems. I can say I have nothing to gripe about regarding this tablet. Size is obviously personal preference but I am entirely happy with the 7 inch display, which is bright and clear. Android market comes as standard and installing apps is a snip. Movies play with clarity and sharpness, the internal speakers are fine but headphones are obviously better. BBC Iplayer plays with smoothness and no interuption on wireless (obviously depending on signal strength). The capacitive screen is responsive with the pinch-zoom feature being particularly effective. Being an academic I have installed and easily read (using adobe app) pdf articles with no issues whatsoever. Installing Juice defender app has improved battery usage but turning off the wireless when not online is the best way forward here and I assume applies to all tablets. I installed an extra 16gb micro sd card to add to the 8gb internal memory, all of which is sufficient for my needs. As I said in the title, it does what it says on the tin!. Slightly fragile stand to enable movie viewing but works well. To be recommended.

This tablet seems good value for money without cutting too many corners. It's reasonably responsive but not as snappy as a £400 tablet. It's got Android 3.1 but not version 4. My advice is to buy this if you want a tablet and don't want to spend a lot of money. Don't buy it if you want the cutting edge of tech.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 7 inch Tablet - recommended purchase, 14 Feb 2012

I have used four android devices including the Archos 70. This upgraded version is very nice. Pretty responsive, better screen and, for me, the deal maker: usb charging. Yes you dont need to cart around a separate charger. Having used an ipad and an Android phone I would say that this 7 inch device is just the right size for a tablet. Big enough to see stuff but still nice to hold and very portable. I have found 10 inch devices too heavy to be holdable for any length of time. Honeycomb is good on this device but an ICS upgrade would be great. My only problem with the 70b is that when I try to connect it to my Mac over usb it not visible (and I am using android connect). Still very good value at £175.

Latest: Now no problem with Android Connect (probably just needed to reboot)

Bought the Archos 70b thinking it would be a nice little tablet for having out and about. I found it to be very sluggish and frustrating to use. After 3 hours the device had frozen and after resettting it, never came back on. I was probably unlucky, but I have tried demo models and found them to be sluggish also. Might want to avoid this is you are used to fast devices.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Archos review for the computer / tablet illiterate or first time buyers :-), 8 Feb 2012

A lot of reviews are written by people who have a good knowledge about the items in question and give a full technical report. I however don't have an in-depth knowledge of Tablets and have never owned one before so I thought I'd write this review for others like me.
Spending this sort of money was a big deal for me so I did as much research into buying the right Tablet as I could, after a month I decided to go for this Archos 70b.
I've owned Archos products before and feel confident that they are well made. This tablet for me continues in that vein. It feels sturdy and solid and is very neat and compact. The 7 inch touch screen is perfect, no ripples that I've read about on some other models. The built in speakers either side of the screen are loud and clear and the kick stand on the back is a very clever idea.
The tablet itself is pretty awesome. The internet runs very smoothly and incredibly quickly considering that's not a given where I live but its only wi-fi, no 3G support. You really can pull it out of your pocket, turn it on and google something in under a minute though, no more waiting for the PC to boot up.
It's also pretty amazing for watching tv on too. The picture quality is superb and I was able to watch a live streaming football match last night without and breaks or problems.
The layout is pretty easy to get used to with pages flipping through as in a book and the preloaded apps for things like music and video are very nice. You also get asked when you set up your tablet if you want to download some apps which are also very good. It also comes with a trial Office app which is pretty smart.
Setting up email was easy and you have full access to the Android App store which has some great apps, I was able to link my tablet to my computer without too much difficulty using pocketcloud. Now I can play Football Manager 12 while I'm in the bath and really annoy the wife!
Now the bad bits. When I got the tablet the first thing I wanted to do was watch something, I was unable to do so. I thought I read that it came with Flash player but I might have been mistaken so I downloaded Flash 11 from the app store, it still wouldn't work. So I connected it to my pc to try and transfer a video, It won't let me transfer any files. I tried it on 3 computers, it wouldn't even register on one of them. Being computer illiterate I took it to my local computer shop. Eventually they got Flash working but have not been able to transfer any files.
I've since bought a micro SD card and popped that in, I can transfer anything to that so it's no big deal to me but it might be to others.
In short it's a great little tablet for surfing, playing and watching things on. Fast, smooth and smart. Well worth the money if you know someone who can sort out any little problems but it looses a star for those two problems i had.
