Considering that it comes for about 350 pounds I think it does very well.
Its weakness is in the graphic card. If you don't have special graphics needs just go for it.
I expanded its internal RAM to 8 GB but that was not really necessary.
Some preinstalled packages keep bothering about registering, but you may definitely want them (such as Norton antivirus), and this would probably happen with any branded PC.
Norton antivirus will run for 60 days, after that you should pay for it (I am probably going to install something else).
It comes with a lite version of MS Office (Word and Excel) with ads.

We chose to buy another compaq because we needed another laptop and loved our almost 1 year old one, which has been great the whole time.

The spec on the laptop is fine for the price and the quality is OK nothing fancy. I expected a HDMI slot as standard. The one sheet instruction that came with the laptop does shows an HDMI slot. I emailed the seller regarding this but he just passed me on to HP. HP customer service is useless they kept passing me from one department to another and I was told to contact the seller. The mouse pad is also a problem as it is on the edge in the front of the laptop and you keep pressing it by mistake while typing. I would use a separate USB mouse. Windows 8 has been on the market for a few months now but this laptop comes with Windows 7. When you try and upgrade it to Windows 8 (currently on offer for £15 extra for new laptops bought recently), you get conflicting software messages as some of the HP programs are not compatible and after upgrading, you may have to download these again. I got these compatability messages for my printer driver, DVD, and the HP programs.

I would not buy another online as you can't see and feel what you are getting. I would stick with the local retailer as I could have picked up a similar better quality laptop by paying a little extra.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not for gaming, 10 Dec 2012

It is a nice looking laptop with a great display. But i suggest not to get it if you are going for a gaming laptop. Frames per second aren't that good. It has quite a flimsy plasticky feel to it but runs well. I suggest getting a tower instead of a laptop because I have seen a tower that is the same price but 4 times the power (16gb ram)

This laptop is simply just bad. I've had mine just under a year and it broken already. I haven't dropped it, or bumbed it, it's just a bad laptop. I recomend this laptop to somebody who wants one for a short amount of time, definetly not for someone who expects it to last over 12 months.

2.0 out of 5 stars An objective, rather than scathing review., 23 Nov 2012

I bought this laptop for my Grandma after her old one ceased to function acceptably. At a £300 price point and a core I3 processor, 4gb ram, and a decent sized hard disk, it's not so bad you'd think.

It's actual computing performance is pretty decent, things load quickly, applications run smoothly but I noticed the wi-fi kept dropping out and acting slowly. Wired networking was slick in any case. Looking at some of my router diagnostic pages it showed that my Grandma's new laptop was only putting out half the signal of my own, another bargain bucket laptop.

I am a quite experienced amateur PC technician. I've seen plenty of rubbish in my time from off the shelf computers. Ineffective cooling solutions for one (especially in desktops). Bloatware removal is also necessary. I can tell you that the cooling system for this Laptop is adequate @ 38 - 60 degrees, and that there is a 'fan' always on option in the BIOS. Very good, however...

After peeling back the cover which conceals the wi-fi adapter, I noticed there was only one cable attached to it, when there should be two. A black cable and a white one. These cables attach to an aerial's inside the monitor and they should form a dipole, together and give a decent amount of gain. In this case there was only one which meant half and a significantly less reliable signal to the router. In other words someone in the factory 'forgot to fit' the other half of the dipole; di = 2.

After extracting a fully functioning pair aerials from an old scrapper laptop the network card functioned fine. I kept the original Wi-Fi card, just removed the single aerial and replaced this with the pair.

I have to say though that this is poor quality control from Compaq, and not what I'd come to expect from them as I've found their products pretty fair in the past. The three year old one that's still going like the clappers in my Mums room is testament to that.

If you get a good one that's built properly then it's going to be a great bargain. If not it's going to be a problem. Lucky for me I know what to do with bad laptops so I can solve my own problems for free. Not everyone has that knowledge...

But for those that do have the knowledge it's fairly easy to dismantle and examine. If you're not bothered about returning it. I like to make things work so I work with them unless they're DOA.

Buy at your own risk. It's worth noting that if you're not up for a challenge then simply buying a usb wi-fi adaptor is probably a better idea than changing the internal one if you're having wi-fi trouble with this. But in my case why should I pay for a brand new item, then send it back to be without it just to fix some silly little problem like that. I'd rather do it myself as it only took an hour to fix it and then I know it's done right too.

So two stars for you. It could have been 4 if it were perfect from the start. But it is now. :)

I bought this originally for someone else and am disgusted with HPs lack of service. It's been back to HP twice now, the first time they admitted there was a problem with the the wifi antenna. It came back with exactly the same problem, the second time they deny there is a problem. I have changed the either lousy or faulty wifi card myself now. I will never buy HP or compaq again.

I got this laptop yesterday and have already fallen in love with it. It is very sleek and easy to use. Even though it is a little on the bulky side it is extremely light to carry. It was so easy to download all the programs and the keys are all easy to find. The webcam it comes with is fine to use and it comes installed with youcam which lets you add effects etc to your pictures. I really love this laptop. Highly reccomend buying from the official Hp website as I was able to purchase mine for £280 not £315. Great laptop <3

At the time of writing, this is definitely the best value laptop on the market. It's light, powerful, the battery lasts for ages even running games, and the graphics card is good enough to run all the best titles on the market - albeit at low resolution and texture quality.

When I first unboxed it, I thought that the laptop was a bit flimsy and cheaply built, but I think this was just the adjustment phase from my previous laptop which is a bit bulkier. Some things I don't like about this laptop; the in built speakers have a slight compression on audio - it might be possible to switch this off though, I've not had any success doing so yet. The touchpad is not depressed into the chassis, so you will on occasion, accidentally slide your wrist over it or touch the left/right mouse buttons, which is a bit annoying, but again, the touchpad can probably be disabled if you prefer to use a regular mouse. Also, there is no HDMI output.

Nevertheless, this is a great laptop that will guarantee you years of use. The in-built camera is great quality, the design is modest and simple, plus it runs really cool and quiet.
