This is about the same size as a normal DVD player but delivers a lot more.Sound is ample for a small room and there are plenty of online features.

Most Disappointing Purchase EverFirst of all sound quality is horrible: sound is boxy - low low quality!
Poor build quality too - You can see uncovered cheap board between subwoofers sides and front panel.
My 2 years old LG TV have better codec library than this SONY.
Speaker cable is too short and this is the reason I can't return this SONY junk to install it I had to increase the cable length.

The player picture quality is excellent though you have to wait for the system (like most) to wind up before anything can be done. The sound is only average and as with previous system, voices seem very low compared to loud special effects, which are better. 5.0 out of 5 stars The sound is great, 22 Feb 2013

It is a good homecinema, in spite of I think it doesn't manage really well the sound sometimes. Things like music plugged into the usb, videoclips, singstar, etc, it doesn't really let you enhance or improve the sound presets.The 360 effect is not really good either, things like helicopters doesn't sound like you have it passing over you. I expected a bit more from a Sony Home Cinema system.

I bought this system for use with a Bravia HX8-series television in a relatively small room (the kind of room which would just about contain a double bed with enough room left over to smash your shins against it).Setup is an absolute doddle - all the speaker cables are colour-coded and labelled, and there is basically only one HDMI connection to make to the television. The HDMI input port supports ARC (audio return channel), so if your TV also supports ARC then audio from your game console, satellite box etc can be looped back from the telly to the Blu-Ray player automatically. If there's no HDMI port that supports ARC on your television, then the same thing can be achieved using an optical link cable.
The audio quality is pretty good considering this is right at the low end of the market as far as speaker systems go. The subwoofer really packs a punch, the front speakers are very capable, and the rear speakers contribute to a real sense of presence. The volume scale goes up to 34, and for films at least I rarely need go above 20.
Unlike the more expensive models in the same range, this player does not support automatic calibration of the speaker levels (some of the players ship with a microphone for this purpose). However in the menu system you can set speaker distances and manually alter the individual levels if desired. It's not an elegant solution, but it works.
Also missing from this model is DVD upscaling. I checked the specs on the Sony web site, and was a bit disappointed to see that it's simply not supported. To be honest though, the quality of most of the DVDs I've played through this system has been good enough.
The 3D and general Blu-Ray playback are both excellent with a Bravia system. The menu system is fine for what it does and it's not as sluggish as I feared it might be. Others have complained of an overcrowded remote control, but I actually find it has all the features I want on it. It's particularly nice having the Bravia Sync functions there, as well as a separate standby button for the TV which also controls one-touch on/off for the whole system.
I'd like to have got myself a system higher up the range, considering how much the television cost, but with the money I had at the time that wasn't possible. So I'm really pleased to say that this is a very capable system which has already proven itself to be well worth the cash!

Brought this in lighting deal but not dissapointed it at the lower end of range but still does great job has blu ray, and Ethernet. Simple set up. If looking for basic but good unintrusive system I recommend this. 3.0 out of 5 stars Misleading, 27 Jan 2013

I bought this home cinema system first of all because it was a Sony I could not go wrong. In fact, I was wrong!1) The sound quality is poor
2)The wording on the product info suggests you would need no cables because it is Wifi enabled. Incidentally, this is one of the reasons I bought this system, to avoid cables hanging about. In actual fact, every speaker is connected by cables which are not of adequate length.
I was very annoyed when I opened the box to find cables! The only thing Wifi about this is the DVD which can connect to the internet!
I am not a tech expert, but the way this info is presented by Sony is definitely misleading.
I ended up buying a USB adaptor, thinking this would allow me to connect everything up. I am now returning it to the seller because the DVD would not recognize a non sony USB wireless adapter.
3)What is the point of not including an HDMI cable? So you buy the unit and cannot use it because you need to buy yet another cable to connect the thing up!
And that is not all, if you were contemplating on connecting your set top box, you will need yet another cable!! This one is called an "Optical cable".
4) Poor instructions in the quick set up leaflet-Following the instructions, I connected my newly owned optical cable from my set top box to the home cinema system. This was fine when watching programs from the set top box, but when I switched to Lovefilm or youtube channels from the TV, I now had the sound from the set top box only, and images from the TV (Sony by the way).
I had to go to a local electronics shop and a kind man there told me I needed to connect the optical cable from the TV to the Home cinema system.
5) The speakers are of poor quality plastics.
6) Speaker cables too short. I had to nip to a local electronics shop and buy additional cable for connection.
I have never been so annoyed when writing a review, but I think Sony might be getting complacent and taking it's customers for a ride.

When the sales list said there would be no wires if you purchased USB network adapter, I thought this meant the speaker wires -not so. In fairness my money was refunded for both 4.0 out of 5 stars Great core functions, missing some details, 19 Jan 2013

+ very nice upscaling for DVD;+ good interoperability with LG tv and compliancy of HDMI ARC functions;
+ reads FLAC files (renamed to MP3);
- no random/shuffle function;
- speakers quality could be better (the same for the sub-woofer);
- long startup time (overcome by some advanced standby feature, though more power consuming);
- a little bit noisy, but noticeable only if there is a quite scene.
