Well made and "nonsense" free cables. These cables are economical and well designed to connect TVs and audio devices at a realistic price. Many HDMI cables are set at outrageous prices when really something like this will do the job just as well.

AmazonBasics offer us two useful cables in one fairly competitively-priced package - ideal if you need to connect an HD box and soundbar to your TV, for example. The HDMI cable is nicely made and at two metres is a decent length - it also allows HDMI internet sharing between devices, see the illustration in the Product Description for info on how this is a good thing!

The Toslink (Toshiba created this standard) cable is much better than the one provided with my soundbar, and although it doesn't actually sound any better looks like it will last a lot longer! It is worth checking the price of these two items separately as, at the time of writing, you could actually get the pair for less by buying them individually!

Packed in the usual eco-friendly AmazonBasics box which is easy to open and recyclable this is a good combination of quality products that many will find useful. I would have given five stars except for the pricing anomaly at the time of writing.

Both cables provided are sturdy, flexible and very much up to the task.

There are other cables available that will provide just as good a picture, but with the AmazonBasics range you're getting something a little more durable. Perfect if you're going to be plugging in and out quite frequently (eg If you're using a laptop).

HDMI Lead.
The 2m long HDMI cable is a basic standard design, high speed type. It handles the full 1080p 50fps data rates with no problems. The rigid straight connectors are well bonded to the round cable and are supplied with protective covers, but there is no strain relief at either end. The contacts and shield are all gold flashed. The cable has only just enough flexibility to be routed tidily, is 6.5mm diameter, and is marked
'Amazon Basics HIGH SPEED HDMI CABLE WITH ETHERNET E226001 AWM STYLE 20276 VW-1 80°C 30V'.
The cross section of the plugs measures at 21mm by 12mm, and the covers 18mm by 8mm, but the rounding of the corners means it only requires a 22mm diameter hole if it is to be fed through awkward places.

TOSLINK lead.
The 1.8m long TOSLINK lead is a good value standard design. It handles the full multi-channel audio data rates with no problems. The rigid straight connectors are well bonded to the round sheath, and there is some strain relief at each end. The supplied protective covers each have a retaining strap to prevent them being lost, so allowing the delicate fibre end to be protected again when the lead is unplugged. The lead has ample flexibility to be routed tidily, is 6mm diameter, and is marked
'Amazon Basics HIGH PERFORMANCE LOW LOSS DIGITAL OPTICAL INTERCONNECT WITH PREMIUM GRADE OPTICAL FIBRE'
The cross section of the plugs measures at 12.5mm square, so it requires a 16mm diameter hole if it is to be fed through awkward places.

My surround amp and subwoofer live in the disused fireplace behind the TV, so this short TOSLINK lead is perfect, but I have needed a longer TOSLINK lead from the media player in the nearby alcove.

Summary.
I rate the HDMI as being closer to four stars specifically because of the lack of strain relief and being significantly stiffer than any of my other HDMI cables. However the nicely made, flexible and durable TOSLINK lead is a definite five star item, much, much better than the one it replaced. Hence, overall this combination scrapes five stars.

With the advent of HD and the services that entail, the cabling and connections becomes all important. When I went comparison shopping for my tv, I was looking for a fair number of HDMI inputs. I was ready to also plot down the going price for an quallty HDMI cable which more than a tenner. Around the same time the tech journals started coming out with opininon based studies saying you couldn't tell the difference between a expensive cable and a cheapie.

The other point of this bundle is that many flat screens are coming with optical outputs. The same journals I was consulting pointed out the common fallacy of someone going out to spend throusands on the visual and rely on the tinny audio from the tv itself. Not being an audiophile, I went halfway and purchased a 2.1 soundbar that unfortunately still relied on traditional cabling. (baby + tv in living room don't mix with multiple outputs). I was glad of the purchase: the difference especially watching DVDs is comparable to night and day... but the SPDIF output light from both tv and Revo 3610 glares at me accusingly for not using them.

I am pleased to say both cables work as advertised and are of very good quality. Connections between "head" and cable are very secure (curiously the Toslink has flexible joints at both ends, the HDMI is only worthy of this treatment at one end.) I managed to sample the delights of digital input via toslink having borrowed my friend's Logik sound bar and I am convinced of my next step up.

A quick check of toslink cables reveal branded ones costing more than this bundle alone so this offering is a winner, especially in view of gold plated connections of the HDMI. This should be on anyone's checklist whenever purchasing a AV system.

Both of these cables are of high quality manufacture and give the impression that they will last a long time.
I connected the hdmi cable from a Blu ray player to a plasma TV and the optical cable from the Blu ray player to a 5.1 yamaha surround amp.Both cables have plastic protectors over the connectors which must be removed before attempting to insert them into the appropriate sockets.Each cable made a sure and stable connection,unlike cheaper alternatives that I have come across in the past.So far both cables have performed perfectly and as good as the more expensive "name" brand cables that they replaced.Highly recommended.

To be honest, if you are not already using HDMI for your TV, blu-ray, set-top box, games console, etc - then you are really missing out. The picture quality is far superior to good old scart. The cable here is well-constructed, solid, a decent length, and does the job perfectly well. There is absolutely no need to spend any more than this on a HDMI cable, despite all the sales guff that companies produce. It gets bundled with an optical cable which I haven't used as I don't have a home cinema set-up or a pre-amp, but if it's the same quality as the HDMI cable then this set is a bargain.

I really don't have much to say. I know many may see the words "AmazonBasics" and think these are not good quality cables but they really are, they are a very decent length, and feel very durable and well constructed. Main thing is they do the job!
